Nepali Hemp | Yarn Dyed Cotton | Mandala Block Print Cotton
WORLD TEXTILE TREASURE: HANDSPUN, HANDWOVEN, WILD-CRAFTED.
The hemp that has gone into this unique fabric is all wild growing plants from the hills of Nepal, that remote Himilayan country that textile ethnologists believe was the natural birthplace of the plant.
It is hand pulled, home retted, hand spun and hand woven on the simplest of back-strap looms.
It has all the character of the wild plants. The colour varies within each piece, within each yarn, even, from light to dark fawn-beige-grey.
The hand is stiff like the old Levi’s jeans used to be when they were worn by ranchers and were expected to last for decades. This hemp will endure generationally!
Being handwoven on back-strap looms, the most primitive type of loom, the fabric is narrow at 18”.
The length is limited by the loom type to about four yards, plus a 12 inch unwoven part that can be used as a fringe.
They come to us then as a continuous loop of fabric, just as it was woven, all by hand, in remote villages.
Truly a textile in a class by itself, Cheryl has been drooling over tiny pieces of this fabric that sometimes come into “Tibetan” shops in the form of handbags or other small items. Finally she located a young Nepali willing to collect and ship these rolls of raw fabric, a daunting task in a country so remote.
Limied supply, each roll unique.
If you are a textile collector, or especially if you are a fan of the hemp plant, you need one of these rolls in your collection!
